Hair Fall in Women: Common Causes and Treatments That Help

How much hair fall is normal, what causes excess shedding in women, and which treatments actually help. A practical guide from our Chennai studio.

Woman checking her hair ends for damage and hair fall

Noticing more hair in your comb or shower drain can be worrying. The good news is that most hair fall in women has a cause that can be identified and treated, especially when you act early.

How much hair fall is normal?

Losing around 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal, because hair grows in cycles and old hairs shed to make way for new ones. If you are losing clumps, see a widening partition, or your ponytail feels thinner, it is worth getting your hair and scalp checked.

What causes hair fall in women?

  • Stress and poor sleep. A stressful event can push many hairs into the shedding phase two to three months later.
  • Thyroid imbalance. Both underactive and overactive thyroid can cause diffuse thinning.
  • PCOS. Higher androgen levels can thin hair at the crown and partition.
  • After pregnancy. Many women shed heavily three to four months after delivery.
  • Low iron, vitamin D, B12 or protein. Common in Indian diets and a frequent hidden cause.
  • Dandruff and scalp inflammation. Itching and scratching weaken the roots.
  • Chemical treatments and heat styling. These cause breakage and dryness.

Which treatments help?

The right treatment depends on the cause. At our studio, a plan may include PRP or GFC to strengthen weak follicles, anti-dandruff therapy for an inflamed scalp, acupuncture for hair fall to address stress and hormonal triggers, and a diet plan to correct deficiencies.

How long until hair grows back?

Shedding usually reduces within four to eight weeks of the right treatment. Because hair grows about one centimetre a month, visible regrowth and better density take three to six months.

When should you see a professional?

Book a consultation if hair fall lasts more than six to eight weeks, if you notice patches or a widening partition, or if hair fall comes with other symptoms such as irregular periods, fatigue or weight changes.

Frequently asked questions

Is losing 100 hairs a day normal?

Yes. Losing around 50 to 100 hairs a day is considered normal. More than this, or visible thinning, should be checked.

Can thyroid problems cause hair fall?

Yes. Both underactive and overactive thyroid can cause diffuse hair thinning, which often improves once thyroid levels are controlled.

Does hair grow back after stress-related hair fall?

Usually yes. Stress-related shedding often recovers within a few months once the stress is managed and the scalp is supported.
